Exfoliation and Our Skin

Exfoliating is something we think about more in Summer. Sun kissed skin exposed at the beach, slathered in sunscreen and moisturisers. But it’s just as important to exfoliate our skin in Winter – it should be part of our skin care regime!

In the cooler months heating, hot showers, cold air and a drop in humidity can all contribute in drying out our skin. Exfoliating is a great way to rid dead, flaky skin which helps our skincare products be better absorbed, promoting healthier, smoother skin.

Benefits of Exfoliation

  • Assists the natural skin cell regeneration to promote healthy, glowing, youthful skin
  • Improves absorption and penetration of moisturisers and serums
  • Evens skin tone and texture
  • Helps unblock pores and remove dirt and impurities to prevent acne and blemishes

There are two main types of exfoliation

Chemical – This exfoliation uses acids such as AHAs and BHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids) Or Enzymes. These acids or enzymes slough or dissolve dead skin cells.

Physical or Mechanical – This is an abrasive like coffee, sugar, salt, nut husks and shells, rice flour, clays etc., that when applied to the skin remove dead skin cells.

Face and Body

As the skin on our face is more sensitive, things like husks, salts, sugars should be used only on the body. Fine natural ingredients like flours, oatmeal and clays are suitable for gentle exfoliation on the face.

It’s important to be gentle when exfoliating and not to over exfoliate. Too much scrubbing or exfoliating too often can remove natural oils on the skin causing dry, patchy, inflamed or flaky skin. It is crucial to be gentle and work out what your skin needs.

While the recommendations on how often to scrub will vary with each product you use, as a guide 1-2 times a week for your face and 1-3 times for your body. I generally exfoliate my face once a week (I use a face cloth to cleanse and remove makeup most days) and my body once or twice a week.

Make sure you use a Face or Body Oil and moisturise after exfoliating to lock in moisture and keep skin supple and glowing.

Exfoliation is great for guys too. Especially those with beards as it promotes open pores and less ingrown hairs.
