Delicious Hot Chocolate Recipe
This healthier version of a hot chocolate is perfect for these cold wintery days. Whether it’s in the afternoon when you’re after a sweet treat or just want something more than water or a herbal tea. Packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties along with immune boosting vitamins and minerals, it’s a great drink and a delicious alternative to coffee.
It’s also extremely easy to tweak and make your own with whatever you have in the pantry or at work.
1 Teaspoon Cacao Powder
1/4 Teaspoon mixed Maca, Lucuma and Kakadu Plum Powder
Sprinkle of Tumeric, Black Pepper, Cinnamon
Dash of Vanilla
Milk of choice
Optional – dash of maple syrup if you like. Lucuma powder is included as a natural sweetener.
Put all the powders and vanilla into your mug. Pour around 1/3 cup of hot water and the rest milk. I like to use oat milk which I warm up and froth.
I use cacao powder as it’s less processed than cocoa powder and holds more nutrients.
Cacao powder is packed with antioxidants and flavonoids which help to fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. Cacao is also known to promote circulation and is higher in minerals like Iron, Potassium and Magnesium.
You can really include any spices you like. I love to include turmeric along with black pepper for their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant benefits. It’s known that piperine in black pepper allows better absorption of the curcumin from Turmeric. Curcumin may help to reduce pain, help aid digestion and improve gut health.
Maca has a lovely nutty flavour and known to help improve mood and energy levels.
Kakadu Plum is extremely high in Vitamin C, great for boosting the immune system.
Cinnamon adds a little sweetness and can help stabilise blood sugar levels.
It’s also really easy to swap or add ingredients – add a touch of chilli powder for a really warming mexican hot chocolate, or try cardamom for a lighter, sweeter flavour. A great tasty, warming drink that is chock-a-block full of beautiful natural ingredients with so many positive health benefits to add to your day.
Almost all of these ingredients will be available at your local supermarket in the health food aisle but I find them all in our local bulk wholefoods store.
I hope you enjoy.
